Flesh Eating Bacteria Death

Maybe two days ago I noticed an irritated spot on my index finger. I didn't think anything of it... it didn't really hurt or itch, it was just a red and kinda bumpy/flaky spot. I abuse my hands so having some sort of injury on it didn't phase me one bit.

That is until my skin started coming off of that spot in chunks. Oh, you heard right, big pieces of my skin were just falling off. The thing is it's not bleeding or sore or puffy or anything. It doesn't look diseased (despite there now being a big pink "new skin" spot). I slapped some triple antibiotic ointment on it and called it good. Then I ventured into the public.
And by "public" I mean Brian's house.

I then showed Brian this gross finger spot and he said," It's probably the flesh eating virus or something, no big deal."

WAY big deal. So I wiped it on him; if I'm going down I'm bringing him with me.

Basically, this post is a warning. If I'm dead in a few days and Brian has a spot on his hand too, we died from the flesh eating bacteria and or virus.

Here is phone pic of my finger spot taken today.

As I sit here and type this I remember vaguely that I may have grazed my finger on some cardstock as I was putting it in my filing cabinet on Tuesday and may have gotten a few tiny cuts from it (nothing that bled at all). But the warning still stands.

I'm Really Going to Do It

I always say that. Always. But I'm 100% dead serious about this.

As some of you are aware I tried being Vegetarian for a little while not that long ago. It actually wasn't that difficult and the only reason I stopped (but not fully stopped) was because I was tired of trying to think of new things to eat and I still had meat in my freezer that was tempting me. I've drastically cut down on the amount of animal products I am eating, but I still eat them here and there.

After finishing up with Skinny B***h, I've decided that I would greatly benefit from being a full time vegetarian and eventually I will transition into being an almost Vegan. I say almost because I do believe there are some food items (like honey) that I don't have a problem using, nor do I find them harmful (especially local honey because it helps with allergies).

This may seem totally mindblowing for some, especially if you've known me for a while. You know that I absolutely LOVE to bake and cook, but the benefits of this new lifestyle will far outweigh the fleeting pleasure of a delicious batch of cinnamon rolls (however, I do need to clarify right now that it's not like I won't ever again eat this stuff, but I'll reserve it for REALLY SPECIAL times like my birthday or Christmas). Also, I'll keep baking for others upon request- I can't deny a dear friend homemade cookies!

If you're wondering why I've decided to change my habits so dramatically, I've listed a few reasons below: (also, don't think that I am expecting anyone to feel the same way I do... I don't think this is how everyone needs to live, it's just how I think I need to live to be healthier.)

1. I have allergies. I didn't realize how much of my allergies were exacerbated by chemicals, hormones, etc. found in meats and dairy products. Animals are given steriods and hormones to grow bigger, antibiotics to keep them from getting infections and we wonder why we have so many health problems and resistant strains of bacteria and viruses. All of these foreign things enter your body when you don't need them and your body tries as hard as it can to react to them, but because it's so taxing your immune system is compromised and your are a.) more susceptible to germs and actual allergic reactions and b.) more prone to have allergic reactions to things that you aren't really allergic to since the body is confused trying to process to much. My allergies each year have been getting worse and worse and I'm starting to develop rashes and irrations to new things. I'm willing to bet that a lot of it is just built up toxins in my body and not really the pollen/dust/dander that's getting to me. I'm not saying that those things don't bother me, they do, but I think that they would bother me far less if my body wasn't so focused on trying to rid me of everything else.

2. Dairy is not good for you. Numerous studies have shown that mammals lose the ability to break down lactose in later toddlerhood (so around 3 or 4 for a human). Once you pass this milestone it becomes much harder for your body to process milk and taxes the body much more when it has to do so. Milk is supposed to support a mammal during it's biggest growth spurt and ensure that it gets enough nutrients to develop. After this time period there is no reason to drink milk- especially the milk of another mammal. Human milk is meant for humans and cows milk is meant for calves. Cows are much larger than humans and thus their milk is filled with lots more fat than we need. Sure it's creamy and delicious, but is it worth having to do the extra 30 minutes of cardio to burn? No.

I also learned that milk contains small amounts of morphine and releases opiates when ingested. OPIATES. So cheese and other dairy products are not only not necessary, but they have an almost addictive property to them- ever wonder why thinking about homemade macaroni and cheese makes you feel so good (or cheese cake, or quesadillas)?

Third, dairy stimulates your mucus production, and who wants to be more phlegmy? Not me! Having said all of this about dairy doesn't mean I'm going to completely swear it off yet, but I will definitely start limiting what dairy I do eat (I cannot yet give up Greek yogurt, it's just too flippin' delicious). I also want you to know that I don't look down on anyone that continues to drink milk and use dairy products. This is a personal decision I am making for myself and I don't expect anyone else to feel the same way I do- I don't want to shove it down your throats because it's definitely something you have to decide to do for yourself.

3. The horrific conditions of factory farming. I won't go into the graphic details, but if you do some research you will see the treatment of animals that are going to be used as food is horrendous and many field researchers and reporters have found that the farming standards and slaughtering practices set by the USDA are not being followed in a vast majority of farms and slaughterhouses. This is not to say that all farms and slaughterhouses aren't doing their due diligence in this area, but A LOT aren't and the meat that is getting into our food supply is not as safe as we think it is. So many contaminants get into our meat because of the factory conditions; so much meat is passed through to be sold that doesn't meet the government's standards for being safe for consumption.

Did you know that most countries in Europe will not accept American exported meats because our standards are far lower than theirs? WOW. Plus, the USDA does not monitor the farms that claim to be "Free Range" or "Free Roaming" to ensure that this statement is correct so it is very loosely used. Unless you buy from a local company that is certified by a locally run agency you don't really know if the animal was kept in a tiny disgusting cage all of it's life or if it actually was roaming free outside.

4. You don't really need to eat meat to survive and be healthy. That's right. We DON'T have to eat meat to get protein or iron. We can get sufficient amounts of both from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes and beans. Look at your teeth. What shape are they? Flat. Why? Because we aren't made to be ripping flesh apart with them! In no way do my teeth resemble tiger's teeth for biting and tearing meat all of the time. I have to pause here and laugh because I know someone who, when I first met them, said that they didn't like to eat meat because it was too hard to chew. I thought, "What? Who is this person? They must have pretty puny jaws and bad teeth to say that." But now that I look at it, our teeth really weren't made for a lot of meat eating. Again, I'm not saying I think you're not making the right choice if you want to eat meat, but I think I'd feel better not eating it since clearly our bodies are programmed to eat mostly other things.

There are many more reasons why this change makes sense to me, so I will begin my transition this week. Now that I have more information I don't think that sticking to it will be very hard at all- I just have to remind myself that it's for my health. I also need to buy some new cookbooks (oh goody, you don't need to give me a reason to buy more books!).

Again, don't think I want everyone to live this way and think this way! It's taken me years to really understand this lifestyle and now that I do, I feel it's a good way to go for me. I think it's just important to understand where your food comes from and what's in it!

Hilarious Health Advice

It's no secret that I want to get in shape and be able to wear a bikini this summer without embarassing myself. It's also no secret that getting in shape is freakin' hard. I've been trying to arm myself with enough knowlegde and enough tools to be successful at this. In my quest I ran across a couple of book reviews about Skinny B***h, a book about how to be healthier and get in shape specifically for women.

This book is definitely not for everyone- if you are sensitive to swearing and don't respond well to sarcasm and dry humor, DO NOT READ IT. That is my warning, but I, however, am finding it to be the perfect motivation. Not only do the authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin tell it like it is, but they have really done their homework in the food industry and I'm learning about some SERIOUS healthy eating faux pas that have been passed along to me as "diet truths", when in fact they're probably hindering my progress. (Did you know that Aspartame was rejected by the FDA 3 times before it was allowed to be added to our foods? Even then, it was only "approved" because the statute of limitations on the research behind the original testing ran out. And did you know that refined white sugar is usually filtered by charred animal bones? YUCK)

Also, this book is so funny I laugh out loud sometimes while reading, which is great because I usually give up on non-fiction advice type books pretty quickly if they don't entertain me right away. If you need clarity on healthy eating/exercising/living I suggest you check this book out.

Lovely Things I Cannot Live Without

... right now, that is.
1. Havarti Cheese.

2. My bright blue Snuggie. Oh yes, I have one. Oh yes... it's SOOOO comfy, and I must admit I feel a little like Mickey Mouse in "Fantasia" with it on. Don't judge me.

3. My Nike Free Trainer 7.0 sneakers. They are like putting your foot in heaven. I want more pairs in different colors because I don't think I'll ever want to wear another pair of shoes ever again. Seriously.

4. Strawberry Rose tea. Celestial Seasonings makes it. It tastes nothing like rose and only a little bit like strawberry, but it's SO good. And I can only find it at Albertson's for some reason.

5. Running shorts with built in spandex shorts... because I cannot stand it when I'm running and my running shorts are falling or bunching and my spandex layer is staying put. I want them both to stay put. A few companies make this lovely combo, but I'm partial to one (can you guess which one?)

6. "My Custom Van"- by Michael Ian Black. Yes, the same MIB that is part of Stella. The same MIB that frequently appears on VH1's "I Love the ..." series. It's a hilarious compilation of essays that he's written about various topics, most of which are laugh out loud funny. You can find it in the "Essays" section at your local bookstores... even though it should be in humor; but then again, so should David Sedaris.

7. Oranges. There's nothing better than a fresh sweet orange.

8. Japanese Juniper Bonsai. This may be strange, but I'm totally in love with my little Bonsai. I get so excited about watering and misting it- almost like having a pet. I may name it. I think it may be more masculine so I'll start with guy names and see if any of them stick. Again, don't judge me. Some of you have children. I have a cat and a tree.

9. Horseradish. I've put it on every sandwich I've eaten in the past week and it's fabulous. It gives just the right amount of kick, without being numb-your-mouth, make-you-sweat hot. I just put a little dab of it on the mayo side of the sandwich and spread it pretty thinly.

10. High Ball Energy drinks. They aren't full of crap and sugar and aren't too sweet to drink. Actually, they aren't that sweet at all. They are sugar free, only 10 calories, and are chock full of vitamins and minerals so you don't have that "crash" in a few hours from it. Plus, they come in a cute little glass bottle that's SO easy to recycle. They carry them at random stores... and not all stores have it at all locations. Sometimes they are with the "Natural" foods, sometimes with the juices and sodas. But I urge you to try one if you are so inclined.

If You Won't, I Will

A lot of my friends don't update their blogs on a very regular basis, and I find myself getting a little upset that they don't mostly because that is my form of entertainment. When I have a free minute (like right now at work), I like to peruse the blogosphere and see all of the fun and interesting things that you wonderful people are up to.

So since you happy folks are out there having a good old time and neglecting your lonely little blogs, I will take it upon myself to update mine more. I feel like I can't be the only one like this and so if I update mine it will add to entertainment value of someones day (even if I'm not so entertaining, interesting, etc).

On that same note, but skewed, I don't have much to write about today. I didn't pack my lunch today because I woke up late so I'll probably run over to Zupan's or Whole Foods and get something at some point for lunch... they both have excellent sandwhiches. And I've got to complete my crazy daily "To Do" list at work today. Hopefully something funny will happen, or at least mildly humorous.

Which reminds me- you know who's hilarious? Nick Swardson. If you're bored, check him out here.

What Is It?

... allergies or a cold/virus? I have no idea. Last week I knew for sure that it was allgergies because I had a runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy skin and a rash and bloody noses. This week I'm not so sure. I feel like someone hit me with a bag of bricks repeatedly, my throat hurts, my head hurts, nothing tastes right and I still have all of my normal allergy symptoms. Also, no cold or allergy medicine I've tried this week has helped. UGH.
But I did start using a nasal irrigator (sounds GROSS and it only kind of is) with salt and goldenseal in the washing solution which was really starting to improve my breathing and runny nose... until I woke up today with a completely stuffed up head.-(thanks Courtney, for the tip about the Goldenseal!) I'm hoping it all goes away soon.
WHHHYYY? I feel like if I'm not sick, I've got crummy allergies to deal with.
Just wanted to whine today. Thanks for letting me get it out of my system.

NEW.FAVORITE.BAND.

Ok, I'm a little bit hesitant to share this with everyone, but I decided that I had to because it's just too good to keep private. I think I should explain that first. I LOVE music. I love it so much that I feel a little stingy when it comes to sharing it with new people because then it morphs from being "my" music to "our" music. I know it's a little snobby, but stay with me. It makes sense to me.

I guess I'm just one of those people that once I make something my own, that's exactly what it is, MINE. I'm going to blame this on a number of things -like always having to share a room/toys/etc with my sister growing up (not that I was a selfish child, at all) and using the fact that I think music has really shaped who I am as an adult- but really it's mostly because I feel such an emotional connection to certain things that I feel like they are a part of who I am and what make me unique. Anyhow, so I'm always very slow to share music that I really love with the general public. I reserve sharing music with those who I care for and think that they will appreciate what I am sharing with them as much as I appreciate it.

Enough stalling. I guess I now have to tell you what I've become so crazy in love with (and no, it's NOT Beyonce, despite the previous phrase).

.METRIC.

I heard one song and ran out and bought both albums because I figured if I liked the one song that much, I'd probably like the rest of the songs... and I was right. So get it from iTunes (you big lazy bum), or go out and buy the actual cd and listen to Metric. You'll love it. Also, check out www.ilovemetric.com while you wait.

P.S. Metric is coming to Portland in June. Wanna go to the show with me? Let me know!
