Brass Knuckles and All That
You may be seeing me run with these.
I feel pretty safe when I run. I take necessary precautions (or what I consider to be necessary) because I tend to go running in my neighborhood (and areas close to) at odd hours (like late at night in the dark, or super early in the morning when it's dark). I carry pepper spray with me, along with my id card and sometimes a pocket knife just in case. I've reviewed the information online about safety for women and evasive moves/defensive moves that could be useful.
The problem is, I HATE running with pepper spray in my hand because my hand gets sweaty and I feel off balance. I don't run with my pocket knife in my hand... I feel like that would be silly.
My mom was in the living room watching me get ready to go on a run the other night and she says, "I'm going to get you some brass knuckles for when you run, that way you don't have to carry anything".
My response," hahahahaaaa... Ok, mom".
But then I thought about it, and you know what, she's right. You just put your fingers in them. They stay put because I kind of have a loose fist when I run anyway.
The drawback? I don't want to get close enough to someone to have to use them.
I'm definitely not saying that people should run with weapons. Actually, I wish I could feel safe enough running around at any time, day or night, without any but the fact is that women especially are vulnerable to attacks so I should be prepared for the worst situations and hope that they never happen.
Also, there's ALWAYS creepy people where I run... and I live in a really good neighborhood. I don't think there's ever been any incident in the area, but I don't want to be part of one.

... And It Continues...
I took a Yoga class at the gym last night. It was enjoyable and I think I'll start going to a few of them a week. I was amazed at how much better I felt after... all stretched out and loose instead of crampy and sore with my shoulders up to my earlobes. I guess it's a good way to ensure I get a good stretch in here and there between my runs.
Speaking of running... I've started to develop shin splints. NOT FUN. I had them in middle school when I ran track. All of a sudden this week they hurt so bad it feels like my shins are going to explode out of my legs... and when I wake up in the morning my shins are so sore it's hard to walk and I kind of hobble around. Goodbye ankle sprain, hello shin splints. So I've got to dig out the old shoe inserts and make sure that I do more stretching and more strengthening exercises for my feet and ankles.
Like I've said before, I'm getting old. Well, I feel like I'm getting old. I feel great after I work out or run, and then I wake up in the morning 25 years older and stiffer and sorer. I'm hoping this wears off as my body gets used to my new "healthy" habits.
Ok, I'm done complaining for the day. Running is getting easier and easier despite the sore spots later. I actually spaced out while I was running through the neighborhood the other day and realized that I didn't remember running as far as I did. I think this will be a useful tool for longer distances. If I can keep my mind occupied things go quite well. When I start dwelling on my pace and how much further I've got to go, I get weary and grumpy with myself. This is why I'm in love with my iPod. If I start feeling tired I find a energizing fun song and blast it.
I've also started reading some running magazines. They are quite helpful with the tips. It seems like almost all of them have some sort of Half Marathon training and guide this month. Sweet. I never pictured myself reading those sorts of things. I'm more of a Martha Stewart reader...

Training Update
Ok, so I have been diligent in my rehab schedule for my ankle and it is really starting to pay off! It doesn't look completely perfect yet- a little swollen and bumpy- but the bruising is completely gone and I can actually put my full weight on it.
Given this, I decided to run outside yesterday evening so I plugged in my iPod and away I went. My goal was to just test out my ankle and make sure that I wasn't going to further injure it; I was thinking I'd run maybe a mile or so. I checked my miles a couple of songs in and I had already run almost two miles so I decided I'd keep going. My ankle was feeling great, but I was paying extra attention to my steps so I didn't trip or slide and be back at square one. A few more songs went by and I was almost at three miles, so I kept on. It got a little uncomfortable a little after the 3 mile mark, but I figured I'd gone that far, i could make it home. I reached the corner of my neighborhood before I had to stop and my total mileage was 3.9! WOOT!
I was so excited and feel like this half marathon thing is actually not going to be so bad.
Tip- athletic tape is working WAY better for my ankle than all the stupid braces and compression bands I've used and is WAY more comfortable.

HALF MARATHON

... here I come!
Despite my recent injury, I have decided to run the Helvetia Half Marathon. I know that some folks have been talking about maybe doing it, and I really want to do it. I feel like I just need to prove to myself that I can. Plus, I really don't want to suck at the Hood to Coast later this year.
I have to let people know I'm doing this so that I don't quit. Seriously... I figure if I tell people, I won't let myself NOT run this race. I've put myself on a pretty rigorous rehab schedule for my ankle- which is healing quite nicely now (pics to come?) so I will start actually running in two weeks.... TAKE THAT 2 month healing time. Hydrotherapy... and some great homeopathic rememdies are my saving grace. Of course, I'm going to take it slow until I know I'm not in danger of reinjuring myself, but I'm so excited.
Also, I've kind of debated with my resolutions for this year, but basically I want to run as much as I can. I feel as if my health in general will improve naturally if I just go with one thing.
I love company, so if you are wanting to join the race, or just run... feel free. I'm not the best or the fastest, but I want to do it.
